TWO men plummeted to their deaths on the Gold Coast Saturday when their scaffolding platform collapsed and crashed 26 floors to the ground.
Steve Sayer, 52 and Chris Gear, 36, were killed instantly when the swinging stage they were using to patch concrete on the side of the almost-completed Meriton apartment complex in Broadbeach broke about 8.30am.
More than 100 workers on the site and passing pedestrians watched in horror as the workers desperately called for help and then fell to their deaths.
The men slid to one side of the stage when one side slumped before the entire structure collapsed and they fell.
Friends, family and workmates will meet at Platinum nightclub in Broadbeach tonight to remember Mr Gear and to raise money for his wife Myriam and two children, Elijah and Shaylee.
Mr Gear was a regular performer around the Gold Coast and he performed in a number of singing groups over the years, including Churbro and Geed Up.
Mr Faifai said Mr Gear was a talented musician and other performers who knew him had thrown their hands up to help with the fundraiser.
"It's just a muso thing ... if a muso passes away, we all get together," he said.
"There's people coming from New Zealand and all over Australia. He touched so many people's lives."
