R News interviews Nevin Byrd and Gregory Koberger, student members of the National Teach-in on Global Warming planning committee at RIT, to discuss the Feb. 5 event along with activities scheduled for that day.
Anchor: Rochester Institute of Technology joins 1,000 other schools and organizations for a national teach-in on climate change tomorrow. Virginia Butler is here now to tell us more about whats happening at RIT.
Virginia: Now, this is a daylong teach-in at RIT, and the public is invited to attend, if you'd like to go. Here to tell us more about it is Nevin Byrd and Gregory Koberger, both third-year students and organizers of the National Teach-In at RIT. So, it's going to be a busy day over there. Tell us about the goals of the event, which is nationwide.
Nevin: Well, this year RIT decided to participate in the Teach-In. It's only fitting given our new administration and RIT's commitment to sustainability. We decided that there are so many great student projects going on at RIT in and of itself that people wanted a day of networking and understanding whats going on globally with climate change. So its an opportunity for students to network with each other and show their student projects as well as teachers to teach sustainable practices.
Virginia: There will be a lot of new and exciting information I would image coming out of this. Gregory, why don't you tell us about some of the events that are going on or what will be happening all day.
Gregory: Since it's a teach-in, a lot of the event will be classroom based, so teachers will take their classroom time and teach about green-related topics. There will also be films shown throughout the day and the SAU, Student Alumni Union, will have tables for discussion and show off projects all day. And at 6 o'clock, President Destler is going to be talking about green initiatives.
Virginia: Okay, and events at the Student Union would probably make the most sense for the public if they wanted to come. So you can see student projects and see you can see some of the things going on. The outcome—what do you hope to accomplish from this?
Nevin: Well, I think students will really learn a lot. Well be able to see what students are actually doing on campus. There are so many great projects. It will also be a day of awareness. There's so much we do in our daily lifestyles that people don't really stop and think about—using water bottles, how much energy we use. So on that day there will be things across campus for people to remind themselves about how they're impacting global climate change.
Virginia: Okay, sounds like a lot of fun, tomorrow all day at RIT. If youd like a schedule, you can go to RNews.com and well provide you with a link. Thanks for coming in.
Good project! networking can boost awareness for global warming, and can boost creation for resolving the problem.
Don't you agree?
