Gameplay from Jaguar XJ220 by Core Design, playing on the Commodore Amiga vintage home computer. Retro Gaming.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • you need to try "Vroom " on 68060 !!!!!!

  • @livetouchxj I don't think it'll run. I had to turn it off for most of these games.

  • It plays too fast

  • @TheMrJamu Yes, it does.

  • I used to love this game. One of the very few games my mate got as an original. Still play it now sometimes.

Game runs fast on anything other than a 68000 btw :(

    Bad coding by the makers.

  • @Agerasia I'm starting to think the speed of my cpu may be part of the problem here, as being slower on a 68000 suggests this isn't frame locked. Most unusual for a sprite based game. But anyway, I may try it again with my 68060 cpu disabled, and see if it's playable.

  • I played it on an Amiga 500 and I can tell you it´s way slower... Initial tracks are quite easy to finish 1st. I´m very stranged because that game is unplayable because of the ridiculous speed. Not an Amiga 500? Regards.

  • Having played this and Lotus 2 religiously with my car enthusiast shcool friend back in the early 90s, we found that with a bit of practice XJ220 is incredible fun. (Mess around with the radio until you see the little 2 frame animated icon that looks like rain. I think this was some sort of wet-track setting. It basically made everything extra fast but was especially useful for skimming off the stuff you hit). Oh yeah, as for music... THRASH PIG!!

  • The engine of the game hadn't foreseen the existence or really fast Amigas, or 68060 :)

  • Although i agree with most of your review, still Jaguar XJ220 was for me the best racing game on the Amiga. The style of the game was amazing and let's not forget the killer soundtracks! In my opion not only the best soundtracks on the Amiga ( sharing first place with the music of Turrican 2- Final fight by Chris Huelsbeck) but one of the best game music ever made. The music added greatly to the atmosphere of the game. Too bad this review did not capture that.

I love this game! thnx Steve!

  • Steve, if you say this game is bad because its unfair to you then try playing Grand Prix Legends... with just a keyboard :D

  • Its strange but I remmber this game looking so much better on my Amiga back in the day but that is time for you. It has a good track editor in the game but me and my mates always played Lotus 1/2/3 over this one. It is running way to fast on the 060 chip so it might no be your bad driving LOL

  • This game looks very nice Steve, the turning looks smooth and some fast reflexes are required for this game.

  • I thought Jesus, I don't remember it being that fast lol.

  • You certainly played better on the 2nd video...

(Youtube ordered them this way for me...)

  • i thought youre driving was quite good there Steve... have you seen how jag owners drive in real life? :-)

  • I recall playing this back in the day and loving it for it's similarity to the Lotus Turbo Challenge games.

    Great vid.

  • Nice comic strip style graphics with the dark outlines.

  • this reminds me of Lamborghini challenge and top gear 1 and 2

  • "*CRASH* .. "oh, oh, oh god!".. *CRASH* Haha.. Makes me laugh every time! :D

All in all this one looks VERY good. I have the Sega CD version, but it does not run nearly this smooth.

  • Quite the difference between this Amiga ver and the Sega CD ver im used to here in the states. Great vid Steve!

  • everything about the graphics is simply excellent. smooth scrolling, fast, no flicker or anything. I also like the cel shading!

Much better than the Sega CD version.

  • Yeah it definitely running alot faster than I remember, you will have to try it with the 68060 cpu disabled, but I am liking the speed that it has and it does look and play like Lotus Turbo Challenge one of my favourite games on the Amiga, I always remember the passcodes like PEA SOUP and LIVERPOOL etc..

  • @mortundad It's not a 500, it's an expanded 1200. I'm thinking I should try this again with the 68060 cpu disabled. Sprite based games are usually frame locked, and I assumed that this one was, but I'm now thinking I should see how it runs on a standard 1200.
