WONG:
The death toll from a mud and rock slide in northern China has climbed to 34 according Chinese state media. But hundreds more are still missing after the slip had triggered the collapse of a reservoir filled with mine waste. Here's more.
STORY:
The deadly landslide took place at Tashan mine, in northern Shanxi Province at about 8 pm yesterday. Eye witnesses say that the mud and rock flow roared down the valley in a matter of minutes. It destroyed a three-story office building, a market and washed away some villagers' houses and vehicles.
News reports say the collapse of the reservoir of iron ore waste is due to illegal mining practices.
China's mining industry is the world's deadliest. Nearly 4,000 people died last year alone. Most are coal miners who die in flooding or explosions underground.
China's mines are the most unsafe in the world. Thousands die in them every year.
And the Chinese government chose to do nothing about it, prefering to use their resources on staging a two-week sports show.
I love China.
