"It's one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen" - George M. Sneed (Health Care Administrator's Review of "Fire Eyes".) This powerful and important film is the first to present an African viewpoint on a culturally explosive issue. Somali filmmaker Soraya Mire knows firsthand about the traditional African practice of female genital mutilation. At thirteen she was subjected to it and spent the next Twenty seven years recovering physically and emotionally from its cruel legacy. Fire Eyes explores the socio-economic, psychological, and medical consequences of this ancient custom which affects 135 million women worldwide.

This film is an eye-opener to the people of the world. I truly admire the bravery and boldness of a woman like Soraya Mire'. It's not that she's going against chastity which, apparently is what their culture and practice is protecting and preserving. Rather, she's upholding the dignity of a woman and her body and Humankind as a whole.

  • THE PAIN AND THE HUMILIATION!!! THIS IS A PRACTICE THAT REINFORCES MALE CONCEPTS OF SUPERIORITY! WOMEN ARE VERY POWERFUL SEXUALLY & THIS HAS BEEN A POINT OF HATRED BY MEN WORLDWIDE. IT'S UNFORTUNATE, THAT WOMEN ARE THE ONES WHO MAINTAIN THIS PRACTICE TODAY!

  • @ridwana81 DO YOUR RESEARCH & YOU WILL FIND THAT "IGNORANT" PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE EAST (ARABS), NORTH AFRIKA & MEDITERRANEAN COMPLY WITH THIS ANCIENT EVIL PRACTICE OF SUBJUGATING FEMININE SEXUALITY! RESEARCH & BE BETTER INFORMED!

  • Its not about the money Ms Mire, its about the principle and your convenient amnesia. I gave you my financial aid when I was a starving student.

  • Soraya is an ungrateful human being and has financially exploited many including me in making this film. In 1993 I in good faith loaned her fifteen hundred dollars , from my student loans at UCLA, toward the making of this film. For 7 years there after Ms actively avoided me, cursing me on the occasions our paths crossed. For the last 10 years Ive been living in Japan, and upon seeing her on a recent trip to LA, Ms Mire has conveniently forgotten.

  • somalian savages

  • It sickens me to the stomach that this happens, evil.

  • thanks for sharing.

  • im disgusted with mens response. but in all honesty its women who support this custom back at home i mean, i've come across many women who make fun of girls who arent circumcised and taunt them with questions like, what man will marry you etc etc i hope as somali ppl and as muslims we can discard this part of our culture knowing that Islam does not approve of it.

  • not part of islam, somali culture and its ignorance. ppl in third world countries are obsessed with virgnity.

  • Just by coincidence, before I saw this online today, I had mentioned Fire Eyes this afternoon to an Ethiopian born woman (Coptic Christian - Ethiopian Orthodox) who was cut as an infant. Her son was born in the U.S. and she refused to circumcise him. Her grandson is now 4 and also intact. She knew that cutting any child's healthy body is wrong. She had stopped to talk to me at my protest outside the U of Chicago hospital.
