Curacao 2010-6: Zeeschildpad/SeaTurtle Parc Ascension December 14th

Curacao 2010-6: In Parc Ascension in de omgeving van Landhuis Ascension (in gebruik door de Koninklijke Marine als vormingscentrum) bevindt zich het TurtleTrail, met een bijna zekere kans op het tegenkomen van schildpadden. Blijf geduldig kijken, net als wij, en je zult glimpen opvangen van de turtuka (tutuga) , zoals hij in het Papiaments genoemd wordt.

Zeeschildpadden zijn gebouwd op het leven in het water. Hun voorpoten zijn krachtige flippers en hun schild is afgeplat voor een betere stroomlijn. Ze zijn echter voor het leggen van hun eieren afhankelijk van het land. De vrouwtjes leggen hun eieren in een zelf gegraven kuil op een zandstrand.

Van de zeven soorten zeeschildpadden is de Lederschildpad een buitenbeentje: deze soort wordt daarom in een aparte familie ingedeeld. Het is ook de enige soort die regelmatig in koudere zeeën te vinden is.

Curacao 2010-6: In Ascension Parc near Landhuis Ascension (used by the Royal Dutc Navy as a training center) is the turtle trail, with an almost certain chance of encountering sea-turtles. Being patient looking like us, and you'll catch glimpses of turtuka (tutuga) as he is called in Papiamento, the language of Curacao.

Sea turtles are built for life in the water. Their legs are powerful flippers and their shell is flattened for better aerodynamics. They are to lay their eggs depending on the country. The females lay their eggs in a self-dug pit on a sandy beach.

Of the seven species of sea turtles, the Leatherback Turtle an outsider: this species is therefore classified in a separate family. It is also the only species regularly found in colder seas.
