Strange sound. Can anyone identify it?

This was filmed on January 8th, 2012 (a Sunday) at just gone 6am. I heard a strange sound from across the road just down from my house in Ashby de la Zouch (yes, it's in England, not France) and it woke me up about an hour beforehand. I couldn't see what was making it but it sounded like some sort of duck to me. Can anyone give it a) a positive identification and b) explain why was it making that sound at that time of the morning? It was coming from the grounds of a boarding school opposite and I didn't really want to venture into their grounds as a man dressed all in black at that sort of time really wouldn't have done me any favours if I was caught on the premises.
