I hate they moved the pageant from Atlantic City. It has lost all its shine and glory out in Las Vegas. This was such an elegant format for the show. The pageant lost its class in the 2000s. It became another reality type game show.

@lpvcrcd You are correct! Back in 1950, they started naming Miss America for the following year because there was 3 to 4 months left in the year that they were crowned.

I remember seeing her on Letterman the day after she won Sept of 1986 I had the interview on tape If I still have it I will post it! .. I remember Kellye being a real sweet lady who even the sometimes distant Letterman was smitten by! A few of the comments have mentioned how nice a person Kellye is!

She was Miss America 1987. You are right ... and the contestwould have been held in September of 1986. It was like this for decades!! When did it change? In the late 90s or early 2000's? And what month is it held now?

If she was Miss America 1987 she was in the September 1986 contest Am I correct?? She was passed the title from Susan Akin then! For decades the show was held live in Sept of the previous year and the winner crowned champed for most of the following year.

She just emceed a local level pageant that I competed in...She's an amazing gospel singer, and she's hilarious, too!!!
