Drop to A first. It's easier if you do it with a g gracenote, but still takes a lot of practice.

speaking of birls from c, do you drop to A first from C and then execute a birl, or drop to low G from C then just pull your pinky up and flick it across once?

Yeah, it's a big tune for sure. The reel Pretty Marion is no cake walk either... eight parts long and lots of birls from C!
