Anyone interested in driving on sand might like to read about Ralph Bagnold. He operated the Long Range Desert Group during the war. He and his mates drove model T and model A Fords across the sand dunes of the middle east in the 1930s. They are credited with being the first to use lowered tyre pressures.

@mwl079 I completly agree. I had to winch out a trophy truch because he had extream mud terrain tires that just ate the sand instead of resing on top of it. he was able to bury his wheels at low speeds in a blink of an eye!

I agree with everything this guys said expect for wither you have wider tires ad skinner tires. I have wide tires on my jeep and it makes a big difference when i drive a vehical that has skinner tires. like the guy said the more surface area the better. other than that this preaty almost tells you every thing you need to know about diving in the the sand

@TheCyclosarin Very true. My Subaru wagon goes well on the dunes and sand. mainly due to its light weight.

i agree totally with the aggressive tread makes a huge difference, i had cooper all terrains and they went nicely through the sand but now i have mickey thompson baja mtz and they just dig ALOT MORE!!

@hawkeyesurfer if its just for sand, anything with a high/low range transfer gear box is good enough. You dont need a serious 4wd for sand, serious 4wd are needed for mud, rivers and ruts.

I live in Perth where there is heaps of soft sand. Does anyone have any recommendation for the best 4WD for sand? $40.000 budget.

great vid mate. thanks heaps.
Nah the guy in the video is right! Tread pattern does not matter in the sand... if anything the more aggressive the tread, the faster you dig yourself down and get bogged in sand. As you just said.. they bog you 90% faster.
