Geoff "Deaf Geoff" Herbert spoke to all the students at Fayetteville-Manlius High School as part of their Disability Awareness Assembly on April 20, 2010. He was incredible! The kids really appreciated what he had to say and how he said it! Don't miss his 'moonwalk'.. Michael Jackson would've been proud! He first met up with the FM Broadcast Journalism group (incl. my son, Nicholas) when they won the Burton Blatt Disability Communications Award on Dec. 1st, 2010. See www.werabove.com for more about that. To see more of Geoff, go to one of his many websites at http://www.hot1079.com/pages/deafgeoff.html or http://www.myspace.com/deafgeoff or http://www.linkedin.com/in/deafgeoff or http://www.youtube.com/deafgeoff or http://www.twitter.com/deafgeoff or http://www.deafgeoff.com/ !

Here's what Geoff has to say about himself:

Let's get the obvious out of the way - yes, I'm really deaf. And my name is Geoff. I was born with a profound binaural hearing loss and I hear about 10% as well as the average person. However, with hearing aids, lipreading, context, and visual cues people often forget that I'm really hard of hearing. Or they think I'm "Def" Geoff because I'm so damn cool. I was actually born in Tarzana, CA on February 20, 1984 but grew up in a suburb of Boston, MA. When I was 11, I picked my first internet screen name and "DeafGeoff" was officially born.

I graduated from Syracuse University in 2005 with a major in TV/Radio/Film and a minor in Music Industry. I started working at HOT 107.9 before I graduated, but did previously work as general manager for WHAB-FM in Acton MA, on-air at WERW-AM in Syracuse NY, on-air & general manager for WJPZ-FM in Syracuse NY, and internships with WXKS-FM and WAAF-FM in Boston MA. I've also dabbled in artist management, promotions and booking. I freelance as a disc jockey for parties, so if you're looking for a DJ for your next dance, party, wedding, club, bar mitzvah, bris, first date, whatever... e-mail me. Finally, I'm also the internet geek and web coordinator for Clear Channel Syracuse; I manage and develop content for a dozen websites, plus do graphic design, event promotion, and new media. In other words, I'm professionally amazing.

I help out with several charities including the American Red Cross, St. Baldrick's Foundation and the AIDS Walk/Run. In addition to being co-chair of the WJPZ Alumni Association's Education Committee, I'm always happy to speak to students in local schools, give advice and be a role model both as a professional in my field and as an individual who's overcome a disability to succeed in life. I skate with the CNY men's roller derby team The Quadfathers in Utica/Rome as 'Funk Roll Brother.' In my spare time, I love to go to concerts, dig for new music, go dancing at clubs & bars, see movies, chillax with friends, support local sports teams (SU Orange, Assault City Roller Derby & the Syracuse Chiefs) and continually attempt to make that perfect mixtape to impress a girl. I'm sometimes a workaholic and I do have emotional baggage, but it's carry-on. Friends say I can't be described in one word and you shouldn't be able to either.

As always, this is your neighborhood-friendly DeafGeoff saying "Turn it up. Go Deaf!"
