One of Thailand's most visible protest leaders is recovering in a Bangkok hospital after surviving an assassination attempt. Here's more on this developing story. The founder of Thailand's "yellow shirt" protest movement had a bullet removed from his head after being shot early on Friday, but is not thought to be in a critical condition. Sondhi Limthongul's car came under attack at a petrol station in Bangkok, also injuring a driver and bodyguard. His spokesman said two gunmen shot out their tires and riddled the vehicle with bullets. Bangkok is still under emergency rule following this week's violence involving red-shirted supporters of Thaksin Shinatwatra, a former prime minister who draws his support from the rural poor. The yellow shirts, made up of royalists, academics, ex-military and the middle classes are united in their loathing of Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 coup and now lives in self-imposed exile. The "yellow shirts" were behind the week-long occupation of Thailand's airports late last year and were instrumental in the change of government. The protest ended on Tuesday when the red-shirts who had been occupying the grounds of Government House, surrendered to hundreds of troops surrounding the building. Though nobody has claimed responsibility for the shooting, it has heightened fears the two factions, who until now have not clashed, could turn on each other.
