Teachers inspire and influence us, often changing the course of our lives. Here is a poem by Deborah Pope, a professor of mine from my undergraduate years at Duke. I very much admire the work she does, and appreciate the courses she taught that inspired me to pursue a PhD in English, specializing in poetry written by women. She is a poet and professor at Duke.

  • She had favorites but cared for us and for our work deeply. I know exactly what you mean by "not getting along", she made no secret of it.

Creation was a tumultuous process with her and the workshop felt like a battleground at times and at times it was loving, it was as if once the jousting was done, there was someone there to nurse the wounds and deliver all the soldiers back home. She changed me forever. I am so glad I took that workshop.

  • goofball.

  • Don't poems rhyme? I hope you and your Debbie Pope eventually get along some time.
