Iran dismisses impact of possible US gasoline trade sanctions
A senior Iranian oil official said on Thursday that Tehran could manage to find gasoline supplies, even if Washington imposes sanctions targeting foreign companies that ship fuel to the Islamic Republic.
Ali Asghar Arshi, executive director for international affairs at the National Iranian Oil Company, said: We can manage we have alternatives and we can do something about consumption and also production.
On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of 25 US Senators unveiled legislation, which would give President Barack Obama more authority to crack down on companies that export gasoline and other refined petroleum products to Iran.
Mubarak warns against interfering in Egypts security
Egypts President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday warned regional powers and militias against tampering with his countrys security, in what was seen as a veiled reference to Iran and Hezbollah.
During a May Day address in Cairo, Mubarak said: The Arab region is passing through a delicate and hard stage and facing the threats of known regional powers that embrace terrorism and extremism and clearly brag of animosity to peace.
Mubarak warned that he would not tolerate those powers that he said have encroached on Egypts security and sovereignty.
Egypt announced earlier this month that it had uncovered a plot by 49 men with links to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group, aimed at carrying out attacks inside the country.
Iran challenges Britain and the Arabs in the Persian Gulf Conference
Iranian officials and political personalities taking part at the First Persian Gulf Conference in Tehran, yesterday accused Britain and Arab countries of having falsified the name of the Persian Gulf to that of the Gulf or the Arabian Gulf.
According to Mehr News Agency, the keynote speaker of this conference, Ali Akbar Velayati, Irans former foreign minister and the advisor to Irans leader on international affairs, accused the United Kingdom of initiating this divisive move, and said this change was done long ago by an English diplomat.
Another speaker, Mohammad Khatami, the former president of Iran, criticized the political currents that seek to describe as Arab all the triumphs of the region and as belonging to Arabs. He then reminded the audience that When we seek out the persons who have made fertile the civilization of this region, we find that most of their names are Iranian and most are Iranian characters.
