Farrell's Ice Cream Parlours NBC Channel 4 news story from August 12, 2011. It's been one of the wildest weeks ever on Wall Street. And, with economic uncertainty often comes a need for something comforting, perhaps that's why sales of comfort foods are up.
And, it may be that need for comfort that has allowed one Southern California business to succeed when others are failing.
Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour—complete with an old-fashioned candy counter and touches of Americana is still a local favorite.
There used to be more than 130 Farrell's across the country in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Now, there are only two remaining in Mission Viejo and Santa Clarita.
You may remember Farrell's from your childhood, and that nostalgia keeps people coming back, even after all these years.
"I came for my third birthday...and I remember hitting the drum and having ice cream," said Jessica Hess, a customer at the Farrell's in Santa Clarita.
Tapping into those warm memories during a cold and brutal economic downturn may just be Farrell's winning recipe. Farrell's has been able to thrive and is even expanding. It's adding two new restaurants in Rancho Cucamonga and in Brea, adding 300 new jobs.
The new Farrell's restaurants will be up and running by the end of the year.
And Brea!
