This is an original tune I wrote from a melody that I came up with about 25 years ago. The original melody was intended to be much much slower, very forlorn and melancholy, but one of my guitarist friends from Berklee had once played it in an upbeat Bossa Nova style just to see how it would sound. I never did anything with it back then, but when I pulled it back out recently I decided to give the Bossa Nova idea another try. It's totally different than what I originally envisioned for the tune...but I also think it totally works. I decided to add a swing section for the solo choruses to make it even more interesting.

This is just the first two choruses. I intend to add another swing solo chorus, then finish it out by switching back to bossa nova for the final melody chorus. I had to stop in the middle for now to prepare for a short trip out of town, but I thought I'd go ahead and post what I have in case I never get around to finishing it.

By the way...what you hear in the first chorus is actually two alto saxophones playing in unison. I recorded the melody twice, then mixed it down into a single track.

Thanks. I think the quote you're probably talking about is from the Air Force song...(Off We Go, Into the Wild Blue Yonder). I threw that in as a tribute to an old Army buddy of mine who is now an officer in the Air Force.

  • I want to hear more songs that you composed.

  • I'm not a very prolific composer. I've written a few things, but most of it is crap...not worth sharing...~L~

  • Very nice tune my friend...I like the way you play the theme...And you have a very great sound with your alto sax (great improvisation too !!)...Keep the same way of composition...It's simply beautiful :-) See you later my friend...GREG.

  • Thank you very much, Greg. Time for another one from you now... *smile*

  • Great alto sound, very desmondesque, which as we all know is no easy feat. You seem to improvise so well on the alto, with nice bopping lines. The cannonball stone series are great, I nearly got an allbright one myself. Lovely stuff, keep it coming!

  • Thanks again, crazyman. There was a time that I wanted to sound as much like Desmond as possible. When it comes to sound, Desmond was always the man in my book, with Cannonball Adderley running a close second. Trying so hard to sound like someone else is a little foolish though, except for the fact that in the act of trying, you do learn how to manipulate your own sound which is extremely valuable when it comes to finding a sound that you can truly call your own.
