  • I feel proud of the pipes I play! Any idea what that first tune was?

  • @FlyingPiper13

    Hi. Tunes are:

    1. Sunset On The Somme. (G.S. MacLennan)

    2. The Fiddler. (Donald MacLeod)

    3. Beyonce's Welcome To Leith. (M.Katz)

    Cheers!

  • Great stuff!!!

Does anyone know the name of these tunes. Especially the first one.

    Please respond if you know.

  • @ParrotFinger

    Tunes above. Cheers!

  • It isn't a Uillean Pipes?

  • @Koyuki91 no they are Scottish small pipes that Mike plays here. Also blown by bellows but a lot less 'plumbing' than Uillean pipes. You can see more of Mike playing both these small pipes and the Highland pipe

search youtube for 'Mike Katz Scottish bagpipes' and also'Battlefield Band' and you should find a number of videos which you find interesting

It takes skill, but it is the kind of skill that can be acquired through dedication and daily practice. It doesn't happen overnight! Mike is blessed with an ear for music and good hands, but he worked hard to develop his abilities.

  • Wonderful. I imagine it takes so much skill to coordinate the pumping and the playing.

  • Any idea where i could download the sheet music for there tunes?

Your Tyneside union pipemaker was a fellow named Robert Reid.

For the record, though, the vast majority of union uilleann pipers were Irish born or of Irish descent. Many early pipers were members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, or professional musicians who were patronized by the same aristocracy. Once the aristocrats fecked off to London after the Act of Union though Irish pipers had to fend for themselves, and that's how the instrument got ingrained in Irish trad music.
