APPALACHIAN TRAIL: THE BEATEN PATH
(May 2002)
Running Time: 60 minutes

Producer Morgan Hook examines the country's oldest hiking path, the men who created it, and those who walk it. Two men are largely responsible for its creation - Benton MacKaye, a dreamer and an environmental visionary, and Myron Avery, a cutthroat pragmatist. Hook talks with prolific author and noted historian Darwin Lambert, Shenandoah National Park's first employee, who remembers both MacKaye and Avery. Hook also talks with Earl Shaffer, the first thru-hiker, shortly before Shaffer's death in April 2002.

  • Some of the views on the AT you would never see from the road! Great Vid!

  • The first two people are Benton Mackaye, who envisioned the trail, Myron Avery was the Lawyer who mostly built the trail.

The WWII vet that was the first to walk the trail was Earl Schaffer. I believe he did it two maybe three times, the most recently about ten years ago, I think he may have been pushing eighty.

  • Great vid, i wish they gave names for the first people to go end to end I need those names.

  • Very nice intro for "the trail"....thnaks !!!
