@kokym8 They are giving less awards because artist have become less influential in music videos. It was still a new medium in the 80's . Also, it was a way for mtv to get an artists on the show. The vma's were still new back them.

last time they gave an award like this was in 2006 or 2005 and before that it was in 1990's !!
