At Sea Level
------------------

standing on the center of a rooftop
parallel symmetrically flushed with the equator line
one foot pointed towards the bending horizon
a slender stark steeple on a shingled split level bungalow
a human beacon on the western peninsula
of an island slowly sinking in the sea
two girls walking hand in hand with umbrellas on their shoulders
past a pink hotel with turquoise trim
a man in the lobby slouched in a hammock
fanning himself with his hat perspiration on his face
a cat in the courtyard jumped and knocked over
a garbage can lid flies flew out and hovered in the air
i got a room with a bed, a desk, and a chair
whistling sparklers on spokes of bicycle wheels
ecstatically screeching away
vibrato whistling a whirlpool of a melody
a chorus of crows cawing away
a carefully constructed curl and the head of an indigenous girl
a beard of bees tickling my face
there's an instant of overwhelming foamy understanding
and i know i can't escape
threw the bag on my back, walked out the front gate
down the cobblestone road leading to the river
took the four o'clock ferry through the viney embankments
across the lily pad lake under the lilac bridge
i got out at the dock, reached into my pockets
tipped the captain a quarter and i was on my way
there was a boy selling sodas i said i don't want any
he said i don't need your pity mister anyways
and as i walked into the city
the sun crept behind the clouds and it began to rain
and i heard the bell tower ring in the cemetery
and i was stranded in the city of the violet crown
and i turned the corner and saw something slightly familiar again
and i found myself a little disoriented
and i tried to look nonchalant but i knew somebody was following me
and i was stranded in the city of the violet crown
threw the bag on my back, walked out the front gate
down the cobblestone road leading to the river
took the four o'clock ferry through the viney embankments
across the lily pad lake under the lilac bridge
i walked into the city through the cemetery
down the cobblestone road down the cobblestone road...
i was stranded in the city of the violet crown
