London's New Year's Day parade has launched a year that will see both the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrated in the city.

More than 8,000 people have been performing in the spectacle, including more than 1,000 cheerleaders.

The BBC's James Pearce reports from central London.

  • It's going to be a hell of a year for London tourism-wise.

  • Spectacular indeed...shame it began to rain in the second half. It sure will be an unforgettable year for London and anyone involved or affected, but I keep wondering...why media don't mention that London also hosts WorldPride this year, which is just as spectacular?
