The obvious reason they released this game so far past E.T.'s "heyday", was because 2002 was the 20th anniversary of the film's release. There was E.T. shit alll over the place.

1-they were on earth to collect plants
2-through the whoel movie he had that flower with him that would wilt depending on his health

Remember the time when this was released. ET went through a slight resurgence because of the overhyped DVD release. The studio was just cashing in.
I agree that the game is horrible but it shouldn't be surprising that they developed a game to coincide with the DVD.
