When I think of the BEF and some French and Italian generals the phrase “lions lead by donkeys” comes to mind.
-
Absolutely right.
-
@j0andc0 "an incomparable army" - Kaiser Wilhelm
-
@j0andc0 The enlisted men perhaps were among the best. Many of the officers were questionable though. BEF Commander, Field Marshall Sir John French was terrible.
-
i will tell you that the BEF Commander, Sir John French was totally in over his head.
-
@bengusandlex I didn't say BEF soldiers were bad, i said the BEF and British Army as a whole were too small in 1914/15. After the Battle of Loos was over, most of Britain's professional soldiers had been killed off or seriously wounded. The Professional British solider was more than a match for the Germans, the only problem is the professional soldier is pretty much dead in the British Army by the end of 1915, and from then on, they must rely on the Citizen-Soldier aka Kitchner's Army.
-
@MrShaneVicious I wouldnt say the army were no good from mid 1915, they were trained very well and quickly got battle experience and were a match for the Germans at Loos and Artois. And from 1916 it was a war of entrenchments, barbed wire, machine gun nests and bad weather, and everybody experienced that.
-
@MrShaneVicious Not man for man they didnt, the BEF had the highest trained force of professional soldiers anywhere in the globe in 1914. Hence the holding action at Mons, the BEF lost much of it's force but the Germans lost twice as much, and even much more at Mons, hence the saying massacre of the innocents.
-
@j0andc0 too bad they were too small
-
the lee enfield played its part well at mons
BEF at Mons 1914 were man for man the best army in the world at that time, no doubt.
