This guy's punches are almost too fast for the eye too see and they're coming in all directions. He would have been a huge challenge for Monzon and Hagler no doubt.
@arama0010 Not that sure that Liston would have beaten Louis, but Marciano he would have beaten i think. Marciano was pretty good with his underated movementthough. You say some good thingd though..
@TheRight2BeWrong1 What has weight division has to do with anything, If you havent seen these old timers fight in the ring dont have such a strong opinion... Its not how you shadow box etc, its what you do in the ring that counts.
@connymat Oh and not to forget Ali had a very strong body and a good chin. And he had the spirit of a champion and heart of a lion. He was also cocky and had a gold medal. Those very talented oldschool fighters had most characteristics but certainly not all. Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Sam Langford, Jim Jefferies, Gene Tunney, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Benny Leonard, Jack Blackburn, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Kid Chocolate, Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson etc etc were all very talented though.
@connymat Not to mention Ali beat the best. In my opinion prime George Foreman would annihilate almost every HW ever. Only few may have beaten a prime Foreman. I even think Liston would've beaten both Louis and Marciano. And who could forget Frazier, Williams, Patterson and Shavers. Of course there were very talented fighters before, and certainly there is today. It is a ever- continuing cycle. Ali was just the first HW who had speed, skills and charisma similar to the best ever, Ray Robinson.
The newspaper reports are there to see. We can see how formidable the likes of Walker, Loughran and Tunney were, and then read from numerous accounts (including the fighters themselves) how bad a beating Greb dished out to them and how incomprehensible his style was. And when modern boxing still features fairly ragged operators like Segura, Froch and Vitali, I don't think it's fair to say an 'old fashioned' (whatever that means) style wouldn't work today
@sedod66, boxing is a results-based business. Footage only tells us how pretty a fighter is or whatever, but Greb's results are there for all to see. It doesn't matter how he looked doing it, the point is that he comprehensively dominated his era and beat every Hall of Famer he fought at least once. What's more, we have footage of the likes of Walker, Tunney, Loughran etc, all of whom Greb beat, which shows how special he was. His record is out of this world.
@TheRight2BeWrong1 If you've never heard of Dempsey, Tunney, gentleman Jim Corbett, you should just stop talking...In my opinion, No, the fighters of old couldn't compete with modern era fighters..however those guys revolutionized the sport, and are looked up to by all the greats
@TheRight2BeWrong1 Ali was very talanted, but there was very talanted fighters long before him that both ducked and had great reflexes. Ali got attention cause he was a showman and and got away with doing everything wrong.
@TheRight2BeWrong1 I'll take the word of Champions he had both praise and drew inspiration from fighters of the past. Ali praised Gene Tunney's boxing style. Classic stick and move he called it. Tyson a true student of
boxing history praised and idolized Sam Langford and his attacking style. The term bob and weave came from
writers describing Jack Dempsey's movements. All fighters today use skills, techniques first developed from old time fighters. There is nothing new under the sun.
how does everyone know he was so great if there is hardly any footage? im not disputing that he isnt of course! just wondering. isnt it a bit like everyone claiming willie pep won a round without punching yet no one actually seen him doing it. its just word of mouth and possible exagerration?
A while go I read a selfbiography by Edvin Ahlqvist, the manager of Ingmar Johansson. When he was young he came to New York as a seaman and he stayed ther, and saw all the big fights in the 20:s The first big fight he saw was one of Greb´s and he was impressed. In the book he says that "I could hardly believe my eyes. He didn´t box, he just fought, fought fought. From every angle he threw swings and hooks, until the opponent just couldn´t keep up his guard anymore" (my translation).
look at those tree trunk legs on that little man... gee whiz. Look, anyone who is talking about the fact that "we've never seen greb fight". I know all I need to know b/c of his series of fights with Gene Tunney, and then what Gene did to Dempsey... Tunney beat Dempsey down for 19/20 rounds... and greb is a middleweight. (and if legends are to believed, he beat dempsey in sparring/exhibitions several times)
while certainly different in many ways, I bet fighting greb was a bit like fighting manny pacquiao. Fast and ferocious, if you could't keep up you'd get mauled. Both took on much bigger guys and seem to have an unusual more intense shadowboxing routine emphasizing speed.
@TheRight2BeWrong1 Uh-huh. And you're *not* showing every boxer respect. I'm done with this conversation - like you're username says, you have the right to be (and you are) wrong.
How in the world do they have footage of Greb & Walker signing to fight, but not have the fight itself? Can anybody answer that?

Seems very narcissistic Harry Greb does

A one of boxing legend. Maybe the greatest pound for pound fighter ever. Shame about the footage. Immortal.
