Russia is one of world's most important emerging markets, defined by both its size and its growth potential. Despite the difficulties of the global financial crisis, the Russian economy has performed remarkably well over the last decade, with average GDP growth of almost seven per cent in the period 1999-2008. Following an economic contraction in 2009, the World Bank's GDP forecast for Russia in 2010 is five per cent growth.
