Waza: Kata-guruma
Tori: Tadeu (black belt)
Uke: Pedro (black belt)
Date: September, 13th, 2007
Location: Mehdi Academy, Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Tadeu executing his trademark Kata-guruma variation with a cross grip on the tsurite (lapel side). This throw is perfectly legal under the new rules, while the traditional one is a prohibited act.

In this demonstration he landed softly over uke (Pedro), slowing down by the finishing of the throw, in an act of kindness, a kindness he rarely, or more precisely, never displays in randori or shiai: being on the receiving end of this throw really hurts, believe me.

  • thats lovely throw..... please add a repsonse vid with how to.. gripping and your thoughts for entry if you dont mind..

  • Hi, I was the one taping this video, I have since ruptured my ACL on my left knee and I'm only doing BJJ... I'll try to film a clearer demonstration on one of my BJJ classes, but I can't promise, I don't know if my knee will allow it... I'll try anyway. And don't expect it to be as good as the version Tadeu (tori in the video) did as this is not my specialty as it is his!!!

  • hows that knee..

  • Just the same! I haven't done ACL reconstruction surgery yet. I am doing only newaza at a very good BJJ Academy... I'll probably undergo surgery the coming year to be able to do tachiwaza again. But I feel blessed that the knee almost never give me trouble in newaza! And I'm also grateful that BJJ is mostly only newaza, so I can keep doing Judo ;-)

  • @loudenvier I am a judoka and I hurt my knee, but not nearly as bad as you I think. I've been sticking to alot of newaza, but I should return to my BJJ club at some point. Too bad I'm known as the judo guy there, and my BJJ Master likes to have me spar the guys getting ready for competition so he can see some judo throws!!! Flattering, but also puts me on the spot!

  • @yussefumaketse Hi man! The same here!!! I'm still with a ruptured ACL and I can't play Judo very well, since I can't pivot over the left knee, so I had to change all my throws to the other side... I'm always being requested to do some training with the guys before competition so that I can help them with the throws... This year it was very special as the BJJ teacher requested me for tachiwaza practice at all classes because he wants to get back into competition!!! Very flattering and demanding

  • tama guruma

  • Excellent clip! The new no leg grab rule sucks. Its too many judokas that's very strong at kata guruma and morote gari not they got to change their game. Traditional Judo is where its at. At one time a good competition judoka was considered a well rounded good grappler these type of rules will change that.
