  • I wish that I had some old records and a record player like that.

It is a rather nice sound quality for the age-and it's not wavery or pinchy like most old records to boot. Definitely a great tune, too. My favorite march.

  • I'm not sure about other percussion, but Sousa was very fond of the emphasis that could be placed by a simultaneous bass drum/cymbal hit - so fond, in fact, that he would often cue such hits ad libitum, and the bass drummer was his highest paid musician. Considering this, my guess would be that he brought in the percussion so late because it made the recording somewhat 'mushy,' if you will.

  • Thank you for sharing this recording. My dad had a slightly later version of this on 78 also by Sousa's Band. As I recall Sousa didn't bring in the drums until the very last repeat of the trio. It was a very stirring effect, but my dad said that Sousa really didn't care much for drums and used them sparingly.

  • Had the sheet music right here and played along. Now I've played with the Sousa Band. Great fun. They played here in 1908 and 1912. The Opera House is now a vacant lot.
