give10, a 10 to the 100th submission

Thousands of great NGOs, non-profits, and charities constantly help billions of people around the world. These organizations rely on donations and volunteer time from others in order to achieve their mission statements. Many people already volunteer and donate money, but a large number of people are excluded from participation because they don't have sufficient funds to participate, they don't have time to volunteer a number of hours, or they don't live in the same geographic area as the organization they care to support. give10 is a mobile platform that allows people around the world to help NGOs during their idle time, on their mobile phones.

NGO-type organizations have many administrative tasks they need accomplished, such as video transcription, document translation, survey work, etc., but the time and money it takes for one person to do these tasks is often prohibitive. give10 takes a task, and divides it up into manageable chunks that should take around 10 seconds for someone to complete. These micro-tasks are then available for anyone around the globe that has a few minutes of spare time to complete, and help the organization. For example, a twenty-minute video would be divided into ten second increments. On their mobile phone, a user with spare time would watch ten seconds of video, transcribe the text right on their phone, and submit. give10 aggregates the responses and gives the completed work to the organization.

Overall, give10 takes advantage of the fact that many people have idle moments where they play with their phone, and these same people are generally good-hearted and want to make a difference, but don't have a lot of time. With a large base of users participating, give10 can have widespread impact.
