The Freedom of the City: Models of Urban Engagement & Creativity in the 21st Century at SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, TX
April 9, 2011

Nato Thompson is a writer and chief curator at New York-based public arts institution Creative Time. Thompson has recently organized such projects as Democracy in America: The National Campaign and Paul Chan's acclaimed Waiting for Godot in New Orleans. Thompson's writings have appeared in numerous publications including BookForum, Art Journal, Parkett, Cabinet, and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest.

Noah Simblist is an artist, writer, independent curator and Associate Professor of Art at SMU. He is the 2010-11 Curatorial Fellow at The Visual Art Center at University of Texas at Austin and his most recent curatorial projects include Yuri's Office by Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation at Ft Worth Contemporary Arts (co-curated with Christina Rees) and Out of Place at Lora Reynolds Gallery in Austin.

Thompson applauds the presenters for showing emblematic examples of this approach to art through social engagement, then asks how art informs their work. Discussions develop around giving voice to the personal and funding for projects.
