Throat-singing, a guttural style of singing or chanting, is one of the world's oldest forms of music. It is predominantly practiced in rural areas of Central Asia, where it is called khöömei. The herder/hunter lifestyle in rural Central Asia, with its reliance on the natural world and deeply felt connection to the landscape, is reflected in this vocal tradition. Throat-singers often imitate sounds of the natural surroundings--animals, mountains, streams, and the harsh winds of the steppe. @Ceibhfhionn you need a rich timbre in the voice, then make a sort of L with the tongue and move it about to find the overtones.

I can't fathom how he generates that high-pitched line... I at first thought it was done by a separate flute

@demo1976 This is throat-singing names as "Khuumei" in Mongolian language, and origin of it in Mongolia is Chandmani soum, Khovd province where I grow up. This singer was also born in that place. He plays in his throat singing piece of the one famous Mongolian melody, therefore there is no words to express it, and only beautiful nature, flowers, steppes and mountains etc, are can be imaginated in his or her mind who are hearing this melody.
Tnx
