Set your resolution to 480p. Since this isn't a master or even an early-gen recording, analog a/v imperfections are present. I've made no alterations to the source, aside from encoding without interlacing.

Live from the Pier, once located in the Village Subway in the legendary and now sadly abandoned Raleigh Underground. Less than two months earlier the band released their first EP, CHRONIC TOWN (I.R.S. Records, 24 Aug 1982).

This is the earliest known professionally shot video of a live R.E.M. gig.

Stipe - v
Buck - g
Mills - b
Berry - d
Mitch Easter - g on 1,000,000

Setlist:

1. Wolves, Lower (CHRONIC TOWN)

2. Laughing (MURMUR)

3. 1,000,000 (CHRONIC TOWN) - Note: Mitch Easter, who produced CHRONIC TOWN as well as the band's first two LPs, MURMUR and RECKONING (with Don Dixon), joins the band on guitar.

4. Moral Kiosk (MURMUR)

5. Catapult (MURMUR)

6. West of the Fields (MURMUR)

7. Radio Free Europe (MURMUR)

8. Ages of You - Note: Originally intended for CHRONIC TOWN, replaced by "Wolves, Lower" at the request of Miles Copeland.

11. Skank

  • who's the second guitarist?

  • @Thelastkingofnowhere Mitch Easter, whose band Let's Active was on the same bill with R.E.M. that night. He also recorded in his garage studio and produced Chronic Town, Murmur and Reckoning.

  • Sorry for the dorky comment but I love seeing Bill Berry play because he mostly used a German grip. It doesn't look as polished as the French or the American grip but it's quite pleasing to watch (and he sounded amazing of course).

  • @Nemova I always thought Berry held his sticks in an odd way. Thanks for pointing it out!

  • I wonder who made Stipe an honorary member of my sorority? :)

  • @BestBBQ1 He's wearing your shirt? Sweet!

  • Sonofabitch! What a find! I was at this show. My ex-wife was a huge fan of theirs and we had Chronic Town on cassette. I also remembering it being a Sunday night cause I took off work the next day to go! Wow!

  • Wow, the entire show in one. Awesome! The unknown song is called "Skank"

  • @kenjames64 I am 15 and my dad raised me loving R.E.M. and now I can say they are definitly my all time favorite band. Thank you for posting my favorite live performance by them ever on youtube. I've watched all the way through several times and never get sick of it.

My fathers name is Ken, my middle name is James, and my grandfather just died at the age of 64. You may not care, but I thought that was kind of interesting, so thank you..

  • @kenjames64 You're welcome! ;)

  • Kenjames64 You are one amazing dude. I've never even seen this. R.E.M. is like playing a frat party...and the quality is good too. Nice find!

  • i fucking bow to whoever posted this!!

  • Best part of this was that I was there. I can see myself in it if I freeze the frame.

  • bill berry is in a BAD MOOD and i think its because michael stipe is drunk...
