The government could end up spending over 2 billion shillings each year in car rentals. This follows a detailed plan by the state to sell a fleet of its luxurious cars and be hiring vehicles for some of its staff. The sale of the government vehicles is slated for next week.

Leasing a car in the US is more costly than buying a car to own. I wonder how this is the other way in Kenya. I bet corrupt government officials will collude with the leasing companies to inflate the rates and other charges on the leased cars. Welcome to Kenya, the land of... When you close one door to the corrupt, they open another mightier one and milk your balls Kalahari dry.

@S'smith: Crappy bizness. Lease or buy the taxpayer foots the bill. Lease makes the dealer richer n gov't buying a car is dumb as it depreciates fast...as soon as it rolls off the ramp! The Q should be how much the taxpayer is willing to get screwed.

Do not sell the cars. The alternative is to open a modern museum in which all the gas guzzlers will be displayed so that in the future our children will ponder about how wasteful our previous government has been.

Should the govt. be in the business of leasing cars? I swear we have some of the craziest bunch of leaders in Kenya.

This is useless. Uhuru lied to us that the government has done away with gas gazzlers yet in recent days I have seen ministers being driven around by the latest range rover sport. I do not see the passats anymore. total waste of tax payers money n time.

I don't understand this stupidity. How can leasing a car at 5000/= per day be cheaper than buying the car outright? This is another corruption channel being opened up. With bulk buying, they can get cheap deals and buy the cars ouright, but iam a stupid mwananchi so what do i know?
