This song is about a dying monk on the Skellig Islands off the coast of Kerry, Ireland. Monks copied holy texts on the Skilligs during the dark ages. They are very isolated islands. A Gaelic monastery was founded at the summit of Skellig Michael in the 7th century. The Skelligs have a history going back to Irish Celtic mythology. It is a very haunting place and this is a very haunting song.

@Tull29 luckily I was raised up on her and Enya's voices. She has a beautiful voice and beautiful music. Check out her version of the poem "The Highwayman" if you haven't yet. It has always been one of my favorites. Also you might look into secret garden if you like this kind of music. :)

This woman never ceases to amaze me. How is it that I am 50, a proud Canadian and have only discovered her music over the last two years?
Where the heck have I been? I thought I had Canadian folk artists listed over the years but my god Loreena takes tradition to the highest level.
My shame in not knowing of her earlier.
