On May 5, 2009, the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection (CTCP), of which Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) is a member, held a hearing on H.R. 1319, "The Informed P2P User Act." This bi-partisan bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Barrow, Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), and Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), makes users of P2P file sharing programs aware of the risks associated with using the programs. Many P2P users are unaware that all of the personal files on their computer can be made available to other users using the same P2P software. Already, there have been several high-profile security breaches involving the personal files of people who were unaware of the risks of using P2P software.
