I used to see this everywhere as a kid on the east coast of canada. I don't remember seeing it anywhere in southern ontario yet

@thenitap It looks like a big lump of coap on the side of a tree. Not many places in the US grow chaga. Good Luck!

i have been harvesting and drinking chaga tea for a while now...but what i dont understand is how the parasitic fungus enters the wound of the tree?

One thing. chaga from dead birch tree is not good for drinking / making tea. Chage dies when the tree dies.
And when harvesting, do not cut in deep to damage the inner bark of tree. because that might kill the tree in short time!
