This video marks the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. Taking place at the Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City, NC the Spirit of Freedom took to the skies again dropping candy to the girls and boys as it did under US pilot Gail Halvorsen and "operation vittles" in 1948/49. What started as gratitude for his gift of a couple of sticks of gum and a promise of more candy on his next trip became a promise fufilled by dropping candy wrapped in handkerchief parachutes the next day earning him the nickname "uncle wiggle wings". Gail Halvorsen is in this video celebrating the 60th anniversary. The Berlin airlift helped lay the foundation for the deep and enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Germany. We were thrilled to be a part of such a awesome piece of history.
Check out the book by Gail Halvorsen "The Berlin Candy Bomber".
