@macel82 Good for you... 1. I don't run a reef. I have no corals. FOWLR... I have a small bio-load so what I am running is fine. 2. I have a skimmer. 3. everyone has different opinions as to what works for them. 4. My Tang is healthy, have had him for a year with no problems what so ever..... 5. I didn't see your newest vid, but I'm sure it's super.
Duh. Look at my newest vid. I have a 30g sump with a fuge and an oversized skimmer. Most reefers that know what they're doing don't run canisters or any other mechanical filters other than skimmers. Why should I waste my time cleaning a canister when I can have an active fuge with tons of critters and algae to clean the water for me naturally?
And, though Petco or some other crappy site might recommend a 55 for a yellow tang, no decent site like Wet Web would say less than 6 feet.
You have to spend good money on good filtration. A canister is good, that's what I have now. But a sump is better. If I had anything bigger than a 55g, a sump is what I would use. HOB filters create salt creap, and they don't do a good job mechanically because they're not air tight. So what if a canister is a pain to clean. If you're not willing to do the maintenance, you shouldn't be doing it. Tht's part of the chore. Taking the easy way out with make everything die quickly.
I'm not trying to start a fight here. I'm just offering suggestions... Chill. really! don't get so defensive. everyone has different set ups and experiences with aquariums.....
No surprise it died of ick. Tank is too small and there is NO current in that water. Tangs need tons of swimming room and lots of current to swim into. Also live rock to to graze on throughout the day..and a mature tank of 6 months to a year. You can quarantine all you want, but then put them in a tank like this and they'll have it again.
Also, you don't know exactly what you're doing, either, to have a yellow tang in a 55 gallon. They need 6 foot tanks. And, like I was saying earlier, nobody uses a HOB filter for their biological filtration. Your live rock is going to do that. Most people use a HOB for mechanical or chemical.
Not entirely true. HOB filters can be used for SW tanks with great success. It just depends on what kind of media you use and how often you clean/replace it. Being inexpensive has nothing to do with it. After all, what kind of "filter" are you supposed to use on a SW tank anyway? Live rock is going to do most of it. Some people use canister filters, but they're a PITA and difficult to clean on a regular basis.
