Davie, This is a fantastic fly. I have caught many of trout with this pattern. I have also made a small addition to it, which i believe makes it a more effective. I add some Z-Lon under the wing. Caddis and or sedge wings have a sheen to them that no natural material does. I like to add same color as the wing. That way it doesn't differ the color of the wing its self. Thank you so much for sharing all your tying skill.

Davie nice Caddis ! Polish equivalent is different. Mallard Duck feathers put on both sides of the hook. from the top of the pen tip cut. ( -<<< )
both ends of the pen glues together.
Further construction of a fly similar to your.
ps.
I like to watch your fly.

nice sedge pattern, that body looks good for a strong pheasant tail substitute.

Well tied! The wing is perfectly formed!
In Scandinavia we call this pattern "Europea 12". its probably the most popular dry fly. The fly was introduced in a dry fly serie called Europea by a french company. this was the #12 fly. Therefore the name.
We tie it in all kinds of colours but the "original" pattern is tied with a gray mallard.
Thanks for your tying videos! they are very inspiring!

Davie. The drake feather you use for this caddis, is it the flank feather or is it from elsewhere.?
mayfly36 8 months ago
Hi mayfly36,
It's the feather that runs from it's neck down to it's chest, if you do a search on the mallard drake you will see the dark brown feathers...

Do you apply floatant to the hackle on this fly? And if so, does it affect the Mallard flank?
IDBackpacker 1 year ago
Hi IDBackpacker,
I would apply a floatant to both wing and hackle of this fly, but to help keep the shape of the wing many apply a varnish at the tip of the wing, but it has caught me fish with and without this so it would be up to the tyer..

Great fly davie, what other colors can you use ? I know caddis come in different colors. Also have you done any stoneflys?

Hi fudsd2,
This pattern would work from black right through to white but I would say olives and browns are the most popular. I have tyed this in grey and in a pale yellow which I'm sure would work for an adult stonefly...
