Here's my attempt at making judo kata watchable.
These are moves from Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu. This was part of the Kata contest at the Kodokan Summer Kata Course. This kata shows judo examples for self-defence applications. Kata is usually boring to watch..... Enjoy!

  • This is one of the Judo kata - always performed in pairs. Yes it has elements that look like Tomiki Aikido. Tomiki was involved in the construction of this kata (he was 8th dan judo too), but this is a Kodokan Judo Kata. In Judo, Kata serve to demonstrate technique and principles involved in attack and defense. Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu was meant to be a kind of moderised version of Kime-no-Kata (the old kata of self defense).

  • Excellent technique and great fun. This is a real inspiration to my kata kids who have been working on goshin jutsu for a while. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it.

  • Was this done at the Kodokan? Looks like it was done there...

  • Yep.

  • The editing is very helpful. Thank you!

  • @MursuTheMan it's a kata. so, whether the techniques make sense or not, it's just performance competition. but besides, what would you do if you couldn't step out of the way?

  • Jujitsu leprze :))))

  • I like the video!

  • 0:39 what the hell is that, you cant catch a real mai-geri kick(front leg push kick) like that, you should get out of the line of the attack, not just stand still and get kicked in the gut.

  • 1.04, that was awesome!! Iv recently joined a jujitsu/judo/aikido club which i think is goshin jitsu, really effective and enjoyable to learn, very different from a karate background.

  • I'm curous if they use tai sabaki in these kata?

  • The goshin jitsu is one of the katas that implements selfdefense on a very high level. the way you perform it it is very correct in sequence and techniques. But there is some room for improvement though. (luckily, how boring would it be if you wouldn't have anything more to improve and train? )

I can't see much kuzushi in the techniques. I think if you would show more disturbance of tori's balance in another video (or another demonstration) you could try and have your go at perfection!

  • try those techniques against a fully resisting opponent!
