The Climbers play The Good Ship and Something Good (This Way Comes) live onboard the Tamesis Dock on the River Thames in London on Wednesday 2 June 2010.
The Climbers were launching their debut album, The Good Ship (released 1 June on Willkommen Records) by making their first public live appearance at this suitably nautical location!
The Climbers are the latest addition to the Willkommen Collective stable, at least in terms of material released; the album itself having been produced over an extended period of time.
At the core of the band are principal songwriter, Tim West, and Leisure Society's Christian Hardy and Nick Hemming. Also making contributions to the album are many of the stalwarts of the Willkommen Collective, including Jacob Richardson and Cathy Cardin of Sons of Noel and Adrian, Helen Whitaker, Darren Bonehill and the ubiquitous Will Calderbank and Mike Siddell on cello and violin respectively.
Don't let the involvement of the always excellent Hardy and Hemming give you the idea that this is merely some kind of Leisure Society side project. Tim West is very much the captain of The Good Ship and what you have here is one of best collections of songs released by Willkommen so far. Highly recommended and available to buy right now on CD and download.
Warning! The picture quality of this video is abysmal. This was without doubt, the darkest gig I have ever been to. Yes, I know I've said that before, but Mumford & Sons at the ICA and Shona Foster at the Slaughtered Lamb were positively floodlit by comparison. It is no exaggeration to say that there was no direct light on the performers at all. I could not see what I was pointing the camera at; all that could be seen in the LCD screen was the fairy lights along the side of the boat behind the band. I've brightened it up as far as Adobe Premiere will allow -- hence the shimmering pixelated mess that you see before you. Still, at least you can just about see what was going on, and the sound is great, so please enjoy this historic performance!
hmmm this seems interesting.
