of course you can install compiz on xubuntu just download the necsary files from the synaptic pack manager..
then press alt+F2 and write this in the box "compiz --replace"
voila compiz on xubuntu----

Is it a slow or low spec'd P4 machine?
Ive got an old P4 3.06HT with a 9700 pro and it runs recordmydesktop just fine...
The reason I ask is because my 750mhz p3 with a 100mhz FSB and a radeon 9200 comes close to what your P4 did.
