@elenchus there's a great video, actually, in the show "Human Weapon" where one of the Okinawan masters talks about that for a short time, basically, your hand should take the shape of a dragon clutching a ball in its mouth. I believe its so your fingers are all together (not broken!) and possibly ready to grab the person after you block.
