@MsRohan20 - Personality really doesn't change much over time. However, what does change is how it is manifest in an individual's life. Functional adults learn to mediate those parts of one's personality that are less functional and to lead with those parts of one's personality that are rewarded. However, in parallel to that is a greater cultural context and an individuals ability to create a goodness of fit between his or her personality and his or her daily life.

@applechowder - Yes, but as I've defined love, abuse is something else. Love is about enhancing one's growth and development, but not at the expense of another.

@yume816 - Outstanding question. The reality of living is that it is full of dichotomies. This is one of the biggies. You need to have a deep sense of yourself as well as a trust for others. Current models of Attachment use this cross-axis model to as a strong predictor of the kind of relationships we may have. As a baby, we start with others, but as gain more control over our world, we need to explore and grow regardless of our experiences. So, it's both.
Awesome lecture, boring students.
