A new law is dividing opinion in Norway, as the private sector must now ensure that 40% of their executives are women. Is this just political correctness, or the key to a strong economy?
Ansgar Gabrielsen, who implemented this controversial act, claims it was common sense behind the move rather than concern for gender equality. "My motivation was first and foremost to use the whole population to use all our resources." Yet not everyone thinks this gender-based legislation will help business. Media entrepreneur Trygve Hegnar fumes, "Should I not control my own business concerns? Must I find a woman?"

why would they force companies to have 40 percent woman?

what happens if most woman want to stay at home - and only 20 % or woman or 10% of the total population work?

then this means that this 10% is forced to fill in 40% of executive positions? forcing perhaps more qualified men out of their position to a person who is less qualified purely because of their gender?

Quotas are fundamentally discriminatory.

What has been stated, is to even out the numbers of men and women, its good to pick a woman if that specific job is mostly male dominated. OF COURSE the male will be picked if he has BETTER qualifications. Its when two people have the same qualifications that one should pick the gender that is not dominant in that specific job. It is not only that. It also hurts women. There is a strong social stigma against women marrying men who are less successful than themselves. Men who are unemployed become depressed and lose their viability as marriage partners. This reduces the number of men available for these educated women. This reduces marriage and childbirth rates, leaving many of them feeling empty. This is what has happened in the African-American community. It has taken a tremendous social toll

@adeafningsilence Look up Norway's economy. They can afford to do this, because they make sure to educate qualified professionals. Why would women want to stay home when their income can greatly increase their benefits, not only by their salary but by the support they get when they get pregnant or sick because of working? Norway's unemployment rate is currently 2.80%. This is not only a gender-including advance, but a social and economic one as well.
