State Route 1 (Mission Street) at Bay Street in Santa Cruz, California was built by Caltrans in violation of state specifications.
It is too narrow for heavy trucks and big rigs.
After the intersection, the road gently turns to the right. The turn combined with a substandard lane width forces truck trailers into the gutter, even when being driven close to the center line.
This state-of-the-art reconstruction was commissioned by Alexander Hawes, LLP for a wrongful death trial against Caltrans. It shows how a cyclist was crushed by the trailer of a truck at this dangerous intersection.
Caltrans knew trucks were being forced off the road and into the gutter because the speed limit sign had been hit by trucks so many times that Caltrans moved it over the sidewalk.
Worse, Caltrans ignored multiple requests by the City of Santa Cruz to improve bicycle safety on State Route 1 and could have made this intersection safe for bicyclists by simply moving all truck traffic from the right lane to the left lane. Cost? A bucket of paint.
