More and more states are eliminating capital punishment in the U.S. That too be be something relegated to the dustbin of history in my lifetime. Funny you mention Japan. They too have a welfare state. Every advanced society has a welfare state. That's a major aspect of what creates a strong middle-class, which in turn creates a great society.
