This is The 3rd installment to my short series of fight scenes: "The Showdown." This is my first scripted/choreographed hand to hand fight, that was a total of three pages long.
Pre-production was a long and complicated process because originally the fight was created with the thought of two amateurs fighting, or two of my friends without any martial arts experience. Well I went through 2 sets of people that weren't capable of doing the fight so I found Rob and Mike who were openly willing to be in a video. From there I went down to The Red Dragon School of Martial Arts, where this video was filmed, and we went over the fight for about 3 weeks straight until Mike and Rob finally got it down. It took a lot of work and effort but it got filmed all in one day. Planning was also hard because we had to plan our practices around the classes that took place in the school, while also working around the director's school hours and Rob and Mike's job hours as well.
Post-Production took a little while to do as well. Due to the noise and sounds of the mall and everything that went on around the Red Dragon: School of Martial Arts, the audio had to be muted and a soundtrack placed over. The awesome grunts and natural sounds that were originally going to be in the video had to be taken out and replaced completely with a soundtrack and sound effects. Certain parts of the fight are speed up to make it look a lot cooler and the color correction (Done by Brett) even gives the video a matrix type feel which what I, the director, was kinda going for. A friend from school, Brett Prusinski, did the soundtrack and sound effects so any audio you hear is credited to him since I got lazy and didn't feel like doing the sound myself. The actual fight was actually a lot shorter then this but the use of multiplying clips from different angles and then cutting them together, makes it's seem like there's more going on then there really is. A good example is when Rob blocks all of Mike's hits in that fast, matrix type way. What I did was film that part from multiple angles and cut it just right so it seemed like he blocked more hits then was actual thrown at him, then speed-ed it up to make it look really cool and awesome.
In the end I had a fun time doing this fight scene, even though from the start I never expected to actually be working with and directing people who were skilled in martial arts training. I learned a lot from them and had a great time with the project and so did they. Hopefully in the near future I will get to work with them again and come up with something 10 times better.
