According to one oil corporation, eliminatiing taxpayer subsidies to the 5 largest petroleum companies would be un-American. Touiting cherished free market princlipes only when it serves their interests, these multinational corporations demand taxpayer handouts to guarantee profits and dividends. Unfortunately, too many elected officials seem to feel that despite a period of record-breaking corporate profits during a severe economic down turn, the needs of big oil trump those of taxpayers.
It is time for a change.

Excellent points about how easily the American public is dazzled into blindness by a little fancy footwork on the part of corporations, Congress, and lobbyists. I know that I don't look closely at what Congress subsidizes or why--or how that subsidy may greatly increase the amount I pay at the pump. But that's only when I use the pump. Like our narrator, I use a car less and less and less. Which is a good thing--but only possible when the government also subsidizes public transportation.
