Make History officially went live in January 2007 and over the two years, more than 16,000 images have been submitted from 90 different countries around the world, of which some 2,000 were featured online. The very best picture stories were also published as Lee Advertising in a selection of print media.
By the end of December 2008, a shortlist of 101 picture stories had been published on the makehistory.eu website. The winner was chosen by a panel of judges including Terry Jones (i-D Magazine) Veronique Kolasa (Le Book), Carla Sozzani (Galleria Carla Sozzani) and Frank Kalero (Ojo de Pez).
The title of the winning work is: THE WEAK IN WONDERLAND.
The author, who has been presented with a prize of €50,000, is: Rossella Dimichina, 27 years old, from Ferrara, Italy. The winning image, together with the other 100 shortlisted picture stories, will be on show at the Revel gallery in via Thaon De Revel 3, Milan, from 25th February until 9th March 2009.
Make History, far beyond initial expectations, turned out to be a milestone project.
And even though the entries ranged between a great number of different cultures and the themes were wildly diverse, there was a feel to the campaign that gave it a sense of unity, where different stories played off each other, turning it into something greater than the sum of its parts.
This is why Lee has decided to turn Make History into an annual award.
