The Sheffield Supertram is a tram network in Sheffield, England, operated by Stagecoach Group under contract to the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. It runs from Sheffield city centre northwest to Middlewood and Malin Bridge, via the University of Sheffield and Hillsborough; northeast to Meadowhall, via Attercliffe; and southeast to Halfway and Herdings Park, via Norfolk Park, Manor, and Gleadless. Construction started in 1991, and the first section was opened on 21 March 1994, shortly after the similar Metrolink scheme in Manchester.

The system consists of a mix of on-street running, reserved right-of-way and former railway alignment. The Middlewood line runs mainly on the street up to the City Centre; the Meadowhall line runs totally on reserved track - from Attercliffe to Meadowhall it runs on former railway line alongside a freight line to Tinsley Yard and the main line at Rotherham Central. The inner part of the Halfway and Herdings Park lines consist of on-street running, with the exception of the viaduct at Granville Road. The Herdings line then runs on reserved track, and the Halfway line crosses into Derbyshire and out again on reserved lines in the countryside. This line also serves Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

The City Centre stations are all located on one side of a former dual carriageway, now a single lane and reserved for buses only.

  • im still tryin to work out what is so super about it as it is fairly limited, it only goes out in three directions and still runs mainly on the road (therefore getting stuck in traffic anyway! I will say though that the price is extremly competietive compared to first buses who are awwwful! my main issue with the trams is that the lines are so dangerous. Iv nearly been slung into the wall on the tracks on whitelane whilst riding a motorbike and it wasnt even wet!

  • I remember on North West Tonight in the mid eighties Stewart Hall did a feature on trams Bring back the tram he said, think it something to with the fact Blackpool had purchest some new bus like single deck trams in 1985 in the late 70s i beleive 2 Balloons were convert into Jubile one man trams

  • it's not expensive an it's sound 4 the match

  • It's 2 damn expensive + it reaches only certain parts of town!!!!
